When our daughters were young, I started a local photography business, focusing on senior portraits. There was nothing like spending one-on-one time with a teen, no cell phones, no distractions, to really get to know them as a person. Talk of their hopes and dreams, their excitement and fear about what comes next, wove through every session. They often spoke about the pressures of high school and the stress of the college application process. It was through my conversations with these students that the idea of Next Step was formed.
After receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Gettysburg College, Mindy worked as a therapist with young adults in the Philadelphia area. She then continued her education at Harvard University, earning a Master's Degree in Education. Since 1995, Mindy has worked as an online instructor and admissions professional at both public and private colleges and universities in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
I first discovered my love of working with students during my 20+ years of experience in higher education, both as an educator and administrator. A well-established career in college admissions provided me with a unique point of view to guide the school search process for my two daughters. It is that industry knowledge and personal experience that enables me to help students and families navigate their own college planning, search, and application process. More importantly, meeting one-on-one with each student, I encourage them to recognize their core strengths and values, and then demonstrate how they can bring those assets to the forefront of their application profiles.
